Timbre and time

Welcome to our online experiment!

The aim of this study is to determine whether different musical timbres affect how we subjectively perceive time while listening to music. Participation will take about 30 minutes. In this survey, several melodies will be presented to you and you will be asked to reproduce the duration of each of them, and rate each melody according to 5 different scales.

Before starting the listening test, please ensure that you are in a quiet environment and that your end device has a functioning audio output. Please use heaphones and Fullscreen.

This survey is anonymous.

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.

If you used an identifying access code to access this survey, please rest assured that this code will not be stored together with your responses. It is managed in a separate database and will only be updated to indicate whether you did (or did not) complete this survey. There is no way of matching identification access codes with survey responses.

Information and declaration of consent for participation in the study “Timbre and Time”

Dear participants!

We invite you to take part in our study. This research is a collaboration of researchers from University of Coimbra, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You can withdraw from the study at any time without giving reasons. Refusal to participate or premature withdrawal from this study will have no consequences for you.

Please read the following text carefully and only agree to the consent form if you:

have fully understood the nature and procedure of the study,
are willing to agree to participate and,
are aware of your rights as a participant in this study.

1 What is the purpose and legal basis of this study?

The study investigates how timbre may affect a listeners' temporal experience while listening to music. The legal basis is your express consent to participate in the study (Art 6 paragraph 1 lit a) and Art 9 paragraph 2 lit a) GDPR). This can be revoked at any time, whereby this does not affect the legality of the processing of your data until revocation.

This study got ethical approval from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, in Portugal.

2 How does the study work?

This study will be conducted online, and a total of approximately 50-100 people will participate. Your participation in this study is expected to last about thirty minutes.

You can end your participation at any time without giving reasons. You can also rest for as long as you wish.

During the experiment, you will listen to several melodies through your headphones. A test sound is provided to help you adjust your volume to a comfortable level. You will be asked to evaluate your tempoal experience and rate the music according to different scales provided. Your answers are automatically associated with a number created by limesurvey and will thus remain anonimous.

3 What are the benefits of participating in the study?

Your participation will contribute to the knowledge about how music listening affects time perception which can be useful to several wellbeing and artistic applications. Participants accessing this survey via Prolific Academics will also get a financial compensation for their participation.

4 Are there any risks or side effects?

In the case you set your speakers/headphones to an inadequately high level, listening to the musical stimuli presented may lead to discomfort (e.g. unpleasantly loud stimuli) or, even be associated with risks (e.g. damage to the inner ear). However, this is unlikely, and a test stimulus with calibration instructions is provided.

The signals used during the acoustic signal presentation are within the range of everyday hearing situations. All stimuli are loudness normalized, which means that, as long as you do not change your volume settings, they all sound similarly loud.

5 What should be done if symptoms, side effects and/or injuries occur?

A potential side effect is the presentation of unpleasantly loud stimuli. In this unlikely case, please interrupt the study immediately. Please remove any headphones immediately.

6 When will the study be terminated prematurely?

You can revoke your willingness to participate at any time without giving reasons and withdraw from the study without any disadvantages for you.

Irrespective of this, we will store your data for research purposes, documentation purposes or to demonstrate good scientific practice until you withdraw your consent.

7 How is the study funded and are there any conflicts of interest for the researchers involved?

The study is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), grants 2023.01403.BD and UIDB.00460.2020, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Grant No. 27276, and the Royal Northern College of Music.

There are no conflicts of interest.

8 Data protection

No personal data about you is collected and processed as part of this study.

Your consent forms the legal basis for the processing of your data. You can withdraw your consent to the collection and processing of your data at any time without giving reasons. After you withdraw your consent, no further data will be collected about you. However, the data collected before you withdraw your consent may continue to be processed in the context of this study.

If you have any questions about the handling of data in this study, please contact the study management first. If necessary, they can forward your request to the persons responsible for data protection.

9 Are there any costs for participation? Is there any reimbursement of costs or compensation?

There are no costs for your participation in this study. Participants accessing this survey via Prolific Academics will get a financial compensation via their prolific account, as informed by Prolific Academics on engagement with this study.
